Monolythe - 1Mix Radio

Der Mystik's Honorable Mentions 9
Hi ladies and gents! this is Der Mystik with yet another exciting interview with no-one else than Monolythe duo!.
The Mexican duo Jorge Carrasco and Luis Delgado have been involved in Electronic music for more than 10 years and now they are joining forces to produce quality Electronic Music under the name "Monolythe". Influenced by Techno, Electro, House and Progressive sounds, this duo is committed to delivering quality Dance music, and rocking the worlds dance floors.
Interview compiled and produced by Der Mystik
The Past

DM - Hi guys, thank you for allowing this interview to happen.
So I'm going to start with the first part of this article by exploring your past.
In your biography, you mentioned that you formed part of an already deceased (unfortunately), Rock music band called "Naranja Mecanica" (link to a video of one of their songs at the end of this interview). Will you explain what your roles were in that band, and what was your biggest accomplishment with them?

Jorge - I was the keyboard player and composer on many of the songs. I can say that one of my biggest accomplishments with the band was creating the album "Supertrip", a nice piece of mexican Rock and participating in the whole production process. Another big accomplishment was playing a lot of great stadiums, clubs and bars, as well as The MTV tour. There were other tours all around the country, sharing the stage with bands and artists like Molotov, Bush, Delinquent Habits, Plastilina Mosh, Laurent Garnier, and many others.

Luis - I wasn't involved as a performing member of the band, I was in the management side, and in the technical part, as a first sound engineer. For me, the biggest accomplishment, was the Mexican tour, and a really big gig in the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico city.

DM - Did you guys help out with the writing, maybe there is a song that one of you wrote and we don't know about?

Jorge - Yes I wrote some of the songs, did some lyrics, and helped on the production.

Luis - I was involved in the composition of one of the songs from the album "Saquenme De Aqui" which took me to a publishing contract with Universal, Miami.

DM - When did you guys decide it was time to move on, and what triggered the big step from Rock to Electronic Music?

Jorge - When the band broke up, everybody went their own way, everybody started to point to a different direction. At the same time, music was having the same effect in our heads and in a way, the evolution in music technology, seemed far more attractive. But I do still love a lot of Rock and Indie stuff.

Luis- At the time of Naranja Mecanica, we were already involved and influenced by Electronic Music, which was clearly reflected in the music. So when the band was finished, the most logical step for me was to get actively involved in the EDM scene. Starting with House music then moving to the Psytrance, and now we are back again to House/Electro music, where we feel comfortable (circles, haha).

DM - You guys have been in the Electronic Music industry for 12 years, am I correct? were you guys Monolythe since the beginning of this quest? and why did you chose to name yourselves "Monolythe" anyways?

Jorge - After the band ended, I concentrated completely on Electronic Dance Music production, Djing and making parties, this since '98 if I quite correctly remember. Talking about the nickname "Monolythe", the name was inspired from Kubrick's "2001 A Space Odyssey" but also for the meaning of the word, which means "One single massive stone".  In a way, that's how I see the relationship and the teamwork aspect between Luis and me.

Luis - Yes time fly uhh, Monolythe was born in 2006 in a very curious way. The first time me and Jorge saw each other here in Europe (long time friends), we were already making some beats and we just asked each other, "why don't we make a project together?" In that moment Monolythe was born, the name comes from the word monolith with a twist, and Jorge explained perfectly, where the name inspiration for it was taken from.

Monolythe - 1Mix RadioDM - Random question: What was your favorite 90's band besides "Naranja Mecanica"?

Luis - I must say I was very into the Grunge type of sound of the 90's and I think my favorite band was Pearl Jam.

Jorge - I can say that I liked all the Grunge sound, but at the time, I was crazy about "Nine Inch Nails"

The Present

DM - Let's talk about your current projects, and more specifically about Big Alliance, why was it born? and what can we expect from it?

Luis - The idea of Big Alliance was born after we thought that it would be nice to have a platform to release our own productions but under our own terms. Basically, that was the initial aim of BA.  Now we have decided to open the doors to other producers weather established or fresh new! But what people can expect from BA is simple: "Quality Music".

Jorge - Luis explained it very well

DM - Big Alliance at the same time joined forces with Straight Up! Music, which is based in the US and owned by Alexander Munoz (one of the former owners of the already closed Real Legacy Records). What was the reason behind this collaborative action?

Luis - Well the reason is very simple, we needed to make some type of partnership with another person for us to be able to concentrate more on the Music production and A&R duties, instead of spending too much time dealing with all the daily details of the label on a regular basis.
We worked before with Real Legacy Records, and we felt very comfortable dealing with Alex (and Paulo at the time) and we also were witnesses to the growth and success of RLR. So one day we decided to just talk to Alex, and ask if he would like to join our venture, as our label Manager, and now he is doing that, and also overseeing Monolythe as our manager.

DM - Big Alliance/Straight Up just put out a massive single called "Siberia" written and produced by Monolythe, pioneered by the luminary Tiesto, Sander Van Doorn, as well as Marcus Schossow, just to name a few stage headliners. What is the story behind Siberia? and did you expect such amazing support?

Luis - When we started writing the track the weather was really cold, dark and rainy, which is typical of Paris and Belgium, so we didn't need to look further to represent that feeling with the name of "Siberia" (we come from a very hot area of Mexico, so the change was very big for us). As for the support, we are thrilled and very happy for all the support for this tune, and we are also incredibly satisfied with the amazing work on the remixes of JELO, Luigi Lusini and Jake Shanahan.

Jorge - Yeah! All the support is very exciting; I would like to thank all the people who believed in our track and the remixes we shared.

DM - I've heard that you guys also are doing a series of events called "Big Alliance Nights". What is the frequency of these events, and how was the experience of the very first?

Luis - The idea of Big Alliance Nights is quite straight forward, we will do a series of events in local clubs in Belgium and Paris, eventually taking it to as many countries as possible. Of course, always bringing Big Alliance artists to perform, we believe it is a good way to spread the word of the sound of the label, but it is also aimed to provide a performing platform for our artists. We are planning to start these events before the summer of 2010.

Siberia - 1Mix RadioDM - Random question: What is your favorite Deodorant?

Luis - Nivea for Men

Jorge - Same for me

The Future

DM - Once "Siberia" is all done and said, what is next for Monolythe?

Luis - Producing, producing and more producing, as well as remixing, and of course, we have other great releases coming out on Big Alliance and other Labels, which we will be discussing when the right time comes.

Jorge - We want to keep producing and also remixing. We are now able to focus more on that side and enjoy it.

DM - Do you have plans of coming to America to play?

Luis - Yes, we hope we can do some Big Alliance nights there too, and we would be very happy to rock some dance floors over there.

Jorge - Yeah, we would love to do some live performances and Dj sets over there. That would be great.

DM - What are your long term goals for your music career, and how will you fulfill them?

Jorge - Keep on doing music and working as team mates. We will also continue to work hard to take the label up the ladder.

Luis - We are working towards a solid music career. Our passion is production, and we are hard workers, we hope that soon everybody will have a chance to see Monolythe on stage as well. With the help of our Management, consistency, and with the right focus in our head, we think we have what it takes to get far in this business.

DM - If you had the chance to collaborate with another artist/project, who would that be, and why?

Luis - For me it would be Wolfgang Gartner and JELO, these guys have a signature sound that I love very much!!

Jorge - For me, I would love to collaborate with the JELO, I really like his sound.

DM - We've come to the end of this interview, anything that you'd like to promote, advertise, say to your fans before we say goodbye?

Luis - Thanks for the continuous support of all the people that believe in us. I want to invite everybody to keep an eye on the new releases of Big Alliance and Straight Up! Very hot stuff is coming soon, and don't forget to keep sending your demos to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Jorge - Cheers!!
